Barrington hosting winter Jazz concert tonight

The Barrington Preservation Society will present its 11th annual Winter Jazz Concert on Friday, Dec. 13 at 7:30 p.m. in the Barrington Congregational Church, 461 County Road.

The concert features the Barrington High School Jazz Ensemble under the direction of Barbara Hughes. Admission is $5 and free to society members.

The first jazz concert was scheduled by the Preservation Society to celebrate Barrington’s long musical history, including the well-known Barrington Boys’ Choir, and the Society will be selling re-recordings of those performances from the mid-twentieth century after the concert.

This year’s concert is one of the first public performances of this year’s Jazz Ensemble and will offer a broad selection of music including selections celebrating the holiday season. A reception with refreshments will follow the performance. For more information, contact Van Edwards,

Jim McGaw

A lifelong Portsmouth resident, Jim graduated from Portsmouth High School in 1982 and earned a journalism degree from the University of Rhode Island in 1986. He's worked two different stints at East Bay Newspapers, for a total of 18 years with the company so far. When not running all over town bringing you the news from Portsmouth, Jim listens to lots and lots and lots of music, watches obscure silent films from the '20s and usually has three books going at once. He also loves to cook crazy New Orleans dishes for his wife of 25 years, Michelle, and their two sons, Jake and Max.
