The Barrington High School math team won its 17th state title in the last 20 years at the state playoffs held at Bishop Hendricken on Wednesday, April 11.

Barrington's "A" team of Michael Lamontagne, Eliot Laidlaw, Jonny Zhang, Daniel Sheinberg, Shiyuan Huang, and Jessica Liang captured this year's championship, outscoring second place East Greenwich by more than 30 points.

The top 14 high school math teams in Rhode Island competed in eight rounds at the state championship. The competition included a relay round and a team round, covering topics from arithmetic, probability, statistics, algebra, trigonometry and geometry.

Barrington scored 145 points to win the title; East Greenwich placed second at the competition with 112 points and Wheeler placed third with 109 points.

Prior to the meet, Barrington High School was presented with trophies for winning the regular season math championship and having five of the top seven individual finishers in the state.

Jonny Zhang placed first with a perfect score of 72 points for the season, an accomplishment matched by only a few students in the history of the league. Michael Lamontagne placed second, Shiyuan Huang placed fourth, Conor McGartoll placed fifth, and Daniel Sheinberg placed seventh in the state during the regular season.

Barrington’s regular season record over the past 20 years is 310-11-3.

Thirty-one students participated on the Barrington High School math team this year.

"In addition to the A team members, a few of these 31 students deserve special recognition for making valuable contributions and showing dedication to the team," wrote Barrington High School math team coach Robert Marley. "These students include: Andrew Cooke, Ben Bazyk, Conor McGartoll, Anika Kelly, Sam Wohlever, Callan Whitney, Sam Yuan, Matthew Bowman, Tianju Chen, Jackson Kustell, Aryana Mohammadi, Will Medeiros, Joshua Wang, and Alex Bazyk. Unfortunately these individuals were not eligible to compete at states due to a one team per school limit."

During the regular season Barrington’s B team ranked fourth in the state and Barrington’s C team ranked ninth in the state.

The BHS math team will travel to Canton, Mass. on April 27 to compete against the best math teams in New England.
