Barrington High School ranked best in state, among top 500 in US

Hey Eagles, be proud!

Barrington High School is the top high school in the state, according to the recently-released US News and World Report “Best High School” rankings.

In addition to earning the state’s top rank, Barrington High School also placed among the top 500 high schools in the country. US News and World Report analyzed data from 19,400 public high schools in 50 states and the District of Columbia and ranked Barrington High School 440th nationally. Barrington was also the only Gold Medal winner in the state.

The local high school fared even better in Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math (STEM) rankings — Barrington was again tops in the state and 178th nationally.

The ranking included scores on a college readiness index, which was based on participation rates and scores on Advanced Placement exams. Barrington High School scored a 49.3 in the index, as 54 percent of the students tested and 48 percent passed the AP exams.

The top public high schools in the country scored 100 on the college readiness index.

The US News and World Report also included other information that helped determine the rankings, including student to teacher ratio (13 to 1 in Barrington), percent of students proficient in math (69) and reading (93), and the STEM index (73.2) which is based on the percentage of 12th grade AP test-takers who were tested in and passed any AP math or science test.

US News worked with the American Institutes for Research to build the rankings, and relied upon a methodology that was based on the key principles that “a great high school must serve all of its students well, not just those who are college bound, and that it must be able to produce measurable outcomes to show the school is successfully educating its student body across a range of performance indicators.”

Following are the top five public high schools in Rhode Island (and their national rank), according the report:

1. Barrington High School — 440

2. Classical High School — 660

3. North Kingstown Sr. High — 1,287

4. Lincoln Senior High — 1,374

5. Middletown High School — 1,504

Barrington showed improvement over last year’s rankings, which had the local school second in the state behind Classical and number 593 nationally.
