Barrington graduate second at Sons of Italy hammer event

In the boys’ 12-pound event at the Sons of Italy Hammer Competition, recent Barrington High School graduate Charlie Ionata  finished second to national champ Rudy Winkler.

Ionata’s mark was 220 feet, 4 inches (67.16 meters), while Winkler finished with a throw of 247 feet, 3 inches (75.36 meters). Ionata placed third in the international (16-pound) hammer with a toss of 181 feet, 5 inches (55.30 meters).

Another Barrington High School graduate, Robyn McFetters, who currently competes for the University of Maine, won the college women’s 4k event with a throw of 170 feet, 5 inches (51.94 meters).

A lifelong Portsmouth resident, Jim graduated from Portsmouth High School in 1982 and earned a journalism degree from the University of Rhode Island in 1986. He's worked two different stints at East Bay Newspapers, for a total of 18 years with the company so far.
