Barrington girls win Class B Championship
The Barrington High School girls indoor track and field team took home the Rhode Island Interscholastic League Class B Championship on Saturday, hosted by the Providence Career Technical Academy.
The Eagles racked up an impressive 91.5 points on the afternoon, beating second place South Kingstown by more than 42 points.
Barrington seized control in the first race of the afternoon, when junior Abby Livingston made up a sizable gap in the final lap of 4x800-meter relay to edge out second place Westerly by less than a quarter of a second, 10 minutes and 8.7 seconds to 10:08.9. Livingston would also finish second in the 600 meter race, as well as anchor the Eagles’ 4x400-meter team to a second place finish.
Barrington senior Alice Burgess finished second in the 3,000-meter race with a time of 10:56, while her teammates, junior Julianna Portell and senior Laura Marshall, took third and fourth, respectively.
The 1500-meter race would be all Barrington, as junior Mary Kate Coogan finished in first place in 4 minutes 43 seconds, while fellow juniors Megan Verner-Crist and Kelsey Maxwell placed fourth and fifth for the Eagles. Coogan and Verner-Crist also scored in the 1,000 meter race as well, finishing second and fourth, respectively.
Another win for Barrington would come in the 55-meter hurdles, in which senior Shenelle Teixeria won with a time of 8.89 seconds, while junior teammate Madison Smith finished fifth.
The 600-meter race proved to be one for the record books, as Barrington’s Livingston and BayView Academy senior Erica Johnson battled it out to the final stride; Johnson won the race with a time of 1 minute 35.7 seconds to Livingston’s 1:37.0. Both girls, however, broke the previous meet record of 1:37.4 that Johnson set as a sophomore in 2011.
Barrington would take second in the 4x400 with a time of 4:22. The Eagles will now gear up for the Rhode Island State Championships, which takes place at PCTA on Saturday, Feb. 16.
