Relay team finishes eighth in 4x1-mile race

Four girls from Barrington High School competed in a relay event at the New Balance Outdoor Track Championships in Greensboro, NC, on Sunday, June 17.

The 4x1-mile relay team of Lily Sefranek, Stephanie Chun, Caroline Livingston and Kate Zitzmann raced to an eighth place finish. The local girls clocked a time of 21:20, which is a 5:20 average for each runner.

Barrington coach Jon Barnes said the girls qualified through their individual mile times from the regular season: "It's called a composite time," added Mr. Barnes. "This was their best time of the season — they don't normally get to run together."

Mr. Barnes said this was the first time three of the girls had competed at nationals. Only Kate Zitzmann had been to a prior championship.

"They couldn't have had more fun," he said. "How many other high school athletes get to compete on national level? How many even get the chance to compete outside this state?"

Mr. Barnes said the eighth place finish at nationals was a great experience for the local girls and serves as a reminder to younger local runners that they too might be able to qualify for top high school track meet in the country.

"It creates a culture and inspires young runners," said Mr. Barnes.

The BHS coach added that some of the girls who competed at nationals will also serve as assistant coaches for the Eagles Speed fitness club, which helps middle school runners train during the summer months.

In the boys hammer throw event, Barrington's Jack Dunn finished 30 overall with a distance of 172 feet, 5 inches.
