Barrington girl is fourth at Northeast Regional

Two-time state cross country champion Emma McMillan, of Barrington, was the top Rhode Islander to finish the girls Northeast Regional 5K race, held at Bowdoin Park in Wappingers Falls, N.Y., on Saturday.

Emma, a sophomore running for the Eagle Running Club, was fourth overall in 18 minutes, 31 seconds. With her time, she qualified as an individual for the Nike Cross Country Nationals, Dec. 7 in Portland, Ore.

The Barrington’s girls’ team finished fifth, with La Salle coming in seventh. Other Barrington finishers included 16. Abby Livingston 19:14; 53. Megan Verner-Crist, 19:54; 69. Mary Cate Coogan, 20:08; 84. Kelsey Maxwell, 20:21; 97. Julia Zitzmann, 20:31.

A lifelong Portsmouth resident, Jim graduated from Portsmouth High School in 1982 and earned a journalism degree from the University of Rhode Island in 1986. He's worked two different stints at East Bay Newspapers, for a total of 18 years with the company so far. When not running all over town bringing you the news from Portsmouth, Jim listens to lots and lots and lots of music, watches obscure silent films from the '20s and usually has three books going at once.
