Barrington Firefighter 5K event is Sunday at the high school

It’s time to lace up those running sneakers for the Barrington Firefighters Local 1774 5K Charity Road Race on Sunday, May 26 at Barrington High School.

The fifth annual event is a fund-raiser to benefit local charities, and this year and organizers are hopeful the event will generate money to support organizations that are in need of financial assistance, especially in this difficult economy.

Firefighter and event coordinator Ted Paull has been busy organizing the race and said they hope to raise about $4,000.

“We are hoping for about 200 runners and it is looking good with pre-registrations. We are keeping an eye on the weather and that looks good as well,” he said.

The event will go off rain or shine.

Some of the charities the race supports include the American Heart Association, The American Lung Association, Meal on Wheels and Heartworks. All donations are made through the Barrington RI Firefighters Charity Fund. This year’s spotlight group is the AfterProm Party at Barrington High School. AfterProm provides a safe environment for seniors to enjoy after the prom. Participants enjoy games, food and have the opportunity to win prizes.

A 2-mile walk, called the AfterProm Party Fundraiser Walk, starts at 10:15 a.m. The 5K will begin at 11 a.m. The 5K course starts and finishes at Barrington High School and will travel along Lincoln Avenue, Upland Way, Foote Street, Prince’s Hill Avenue, Maple Avenue, and Middle Highway.

The morning will be busy with activities for the entire family and shorter race for children. For younger family members, 50- and 100-yard races go off at 9:30 with first place winner taking home a trophy and $25, second place wins a medal and $15 and third place a medal and $10.

The 5K is professionally timed and cash prizes will be awarded to top finishers, with an additional $100 prize if a runner breaks the course record.

Pre-event electronic registration is $14 (register online at www.barringtonrifire.com or www.coolrunnings.com). Event-day registration is $18 and begins at 8:30 a.m. (Same day registration for each event closes 10 minutes before the event begins.) Race information can also be found on Facebook at Barrington Firefighter Memorial Day Weekend Charity 5k.

A map of the 5K course and more race details can be found at www.barringtonrifire.com.

Mr. Paull said those who wish to donate but not participate in the run or walk can become “virtual runners” and make a donation online. (Strollers are also allowed for people participating in the run/walk with young children.)

Post-event festivities include a runners’ raffle, music by a DJ, refreshments, professional booths, touch a fire truck, the Pink Heals fire truck, moon bounce, face painting, a dunk tank and food trucks where part of their sales will be donated to the charity fund.
