Barrington boys set track meet record
Barrington High School’s Adam Kelly, Bobby Colantonio and Mike Alvernaz combined to set a new meet record in the weight throw relay at the fifth annual Rhode Island Classic Track and Field Invitational on Saturday, Dec. 28.
The three Barrington underclassmen — Kelly and Alvernaz are juniors while Colantonio is a sophomore — tallied a combined 192 feet 11 inches to win the weight throw relay event. The total also set a new field house record for the Providence Career and Technical Academy.
Barrington won the relay by nearly 30 feet over second place Lincoln, which finished with a combined distance of 166 feet 7 inches. Bishop Hendricken was third with a total of 163 feet .5 inches.
Kelly, Colantonio and Alvernaz also finished in the top 10 for individuals. Kelly, who opened the season with a throw that would have won him a state title at the end of last year, won the individual title at the Classic with a distance of 74 feet 4.75 inches. (The second place finisher was more than 9 feet back from Kelly.)
Colantonio was third with a throw of 64 feet 6.75 inches. And Alvernaz was 10th with a throw of 53 feet, 11.5 inches.
