Barrington boys roll to track wins over Mt. Hope, Rogers
The Barrington High School boys’ track and field team rolled to two solid victories in their tri-meet Monday afternoon, beating Mt. Hope, 133.5-19.5, and Rogers, 125-28.
The wins improve the Eagles to 4-0 in dual meets on the season, after blowing out Middletown and St. Raphael’s last week in their outdoor season opener.
“This was a good dual meet; it was nice to finally get some amazing weather today,” said head coach Bill Barrass. “We looked pretty good out there on the track; our guys ran very well.”
Senior Tom Barry got the meet started off right with a win in the 3,000 meters, cruising to a time of 9:56. Sophomore Lucas Bledsoe and junior Max Mitchell secured the sweep for the Eagles in the seven lap race. A win in the 4x100 meter relay, followed by strong performances in the 110 meter hurdles by sophomore Teddy Ni and senior Jack Liang to help pad the early Barrington lead.
Junior Max Caro won the 100 meter dash with a time of 11.8 seconds, followed by identical 12.2 second dashes by Sam and Ben Pomerantz. Senior Will Casazza won the 1500 meters with a time of 4:25, while junior Marcus Sefranek ran a 4:36 and junior Travis Soares ran a 4:54.
Alex and Tom Richardson finished 1-2 in the 400 meters, running times of 55.5 and 56.3 seconds, respectively. Ni and Liang repeated their 1-2 performance in the 300 meter hurdles, while junior Jusung Han grabbed a third place finish against Mt. Hope.
The 800 meters saw Casazza take his second victory of the day with a 2:10 in the two lap race. Sophomore Sam Somera was not far behind in 2:13, and sophomore Gerald Guerrieri took third against Mt. Hope with a 2:19. Sophomore Aaron Weisburg and Caro finished 1-2 in the 200 meters against Rogers, and 2-3 against Mt. Hope. In the final track race of the day, the 4x400 meter relay, the Eagles four-man team cruised to a solid 3:56.
In the field events, sophomore Jon Cavanaugh won the pole vault with a vault of 9’6”; sophomore James Heinl took third in high jump; Cavanaugh, sophomore Christos Meltsakos, and freshman Jack Fortin swept the long jump; and freshman Theophile Yvert and Meltsakos grabbed first and second in the triple jump with jumps of 36 feet 9 inches and 36 feet, respectively.
The throwing events were ruled by the sensational duo of senior Charlie Ionata and sophomore Adam Kelly, as the pair finished 1-2 in the hammer throw, shot put, and javelin, while Ionata also won the discus.
Also scoring for the Eagles in throwing were junior Josh Adams, who finished third in javelin against Rogers, and sophomore Michael Alvernaz, who grabbed a third place finish in the discus.
“Our guys had very good showings all around; Mt. Hope and Rogers had some good out there,” said Barrass. “They gave our guys a good challenge.”
The Eagles’ next dual meet action is on Monday, April 22, when they will travel to face Portsmouth.
