Barrington boasts 18 All State musicians at middle school


More than a dozen students at Barrington Middle School earned the Junior All State designation in music this year. The Junior All State Concert Band members are Max Blane (trumpet, grade 8), Lindsay Hands (flute, grade 8), Jared Jageler (trumpet, grade 8), and Matt Zeleznik (clarinet, grade 8).

Members of the Junior All State Symphonic Band are Christian Black (trumpet, grade 7) and Grace Inman (flute, grade 8), while members of the Junior All State Orchestra are Elizabeth Enos (French horn, grade 8), Ian Smith (violin, grade 8), Abigail Wilhelm (cello, grade 7) and Sam Yuan (violin, grade 7).

The Junior All State Mixed Chorus selections are Gabrielle Ellicott (soprano, grade 7), Lily Schwartz (alto, grade 8) and Samuel Valk (alto, grade 7). Lizzie Iserson (soprano, grade 8) was selected for the Junior All State Treble Chorus, while Mary Cowden (alto sax, grade 8), Sam Rockwell (tenor sax, grade 8) and James Winner (tenor sax, grade 7) earned selections on the Junior All State Jazz Band. Ben Medeiros (guitar, grade 8) was selected for the Junior All State Guitar Ensemble.

A lifelong Portsmouth resident, Jim graduated from Portsmouth High School in 1982 and earned a journalism degree from the University of Rhode Island in 1986. He's worked two different stints at East Bay Newspapers, for a total of 18 years with the company so far. When not running all over town bringing you the news from Portsmouth, Jim listens to lots and lots and lots of music, watches obscure silent films from the '20s and usually has three books going at once. He also loves to cook crazy New Orleans dishes for his wife of 25 years, Michelle, and their two sons, Jake and Max.
