Barbara Ann Valente, 71, of Warren, died Thursday, Jan. 24, 2013. She was the beloved wife of Brigadier General (retired) Richard J. Valente for almost 52 years.
Barbara graduated from Warren schools, attended Pembroke College and left to become an Army wife and homemaker.
She served on the Parents Advisory Board for Stecial Education for the Warren schools and on the Board of Directors for Life, Inc. She also served as Vice President of Redmond Realty Inc., a family-owned company. A lifelong member of the choir at St. Mary of the Bay Church, she was a member of the  Stitchers Guild, the Squantum Association, the Massasoit Historical Society and the Washington County (NY) Historical Society.  She was active with organizations for families of deployed soldiers. She received the US Field Artillery Association  Molly Pitcher Award and the Commanders Award for her public service to families of soldiers during Desert Storm. She was also honored for her work by a Gubernatorial Proclamation.
She was the mother of Barbara E. “Beth” Lacombe and her husband Neal, twins Richard J. Valente Jr. and Rebecca J. Fikiet and her husband Jim, and the late Mary Elizabeth Valente. She was the grandmother of Jenna Fikiet and twins Amber and Lisa Lacombe, and Marysa Fikiet. She was the sister of James Mello and the late Virginia Mello.
Arrangements were with Smith Funeral & Memorial Services, 8 Schoolhouse Road, Warren, where family received friends Monday, Jan. 28. Funeral services were Tuesday, Jan. 29 at the funeral home, with a Mass of Christian burial in St. Mary of the Bay Church. Burial followed in St. Mary of the Bay Cemetery.
