Alphonse C. Salvaggio, 91, of Bristol

Mr. Alphonse C. Salvaggio, age 91, of Bliven Avenue, Bristol, died Sunday, Oct. 22, 2017, at the Jane Brown Unit of Rhode Island Hospital, Providence. He was the husband of Carolyn “Carol” (D’Amico) Salvaggio, his wife of 70 years.

Born in Bristol and a lifelong resident, he was a son of the late Jack and Emily (Cirillo) Salvaggio.  Alphonse served in the U.S. Army during World War II in the Pacific Theatre, receiving a Bronze Star Medal, Asiatic-Pacific Campaign Medal and Philippine Liberation Medals, among others.

He was a heavy machine operator for the Alegria Construction Company for over 20 years, retiring in 1986. He was a member of the Teamster Union Local # 251, East Providence. He was a life member of the Defiance Hose Co. No. 1 of the Bristol Volunteer Fire Department and an avid outdoorsman, enjoying hunting and shooting. He was a life member of the Somerset Sportsmen Club. 

Alphonse always enjoyed spending time with his family, especially his wife, daughters and grandchildren and great-grandchildren. He was a communicant of Our Lady of Mount Carmel Church, Bristol.

He is survived in addition to his wife, by a daughter, Jeanne Bailey (Jimmie) of Warren; four grandchildren, Gregory Gamon (Maya) and Justin Gamon, both of Warren, Ali DiGiorgio and Kyla McMullen, both of North Providence; and five great-grandchildren, Hailey, Sage, Ava, Jacob and Rory.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a daughter, Judith A. McMullen, a sister, Antoinette Caromile, and a brother, Joseph Salvaggio. Funeral services from the Sansone Funeral Home, 192 Wood St., Bristol, are at 9 a.m. on Saturday, Oct. 28, with a Mass of Christian Burial at 10 a.m. in Our Lady of Mount Carmel Church, 141 State St., Bristol. Burial with military honors will follow in North Burial Ground, Hope Street, Bristol.
