Alan W. Governo, 79, Tiverton

Alan William “Billy” Governo, 79, of Tiverton, formerly of Adamsville, R.I.  and Somerset, Mass., died Friday, Jan. 11, 2013, at Charlton Memorial Hospital, Fall River. He was the former husband of Jacqueline (Michaud) Governo of Brunswick, Ga. Born in Fall River, he was the son of the late Alfred G. and Angelina (Souza) Governo. He lived at Sakonnet Bay Retirement Living in Tiverton, and had previously resided in Fall River, Tiverton and Florida. Alan was the owner of Maplewood Dairy before retiring in 1974. He was the founder of the former Sakonnet Sports Car Club. Alan enjoyed old comedies and cowboy movies, especially John Wayne. He loved chow mein sandwiches, chouriço and chips and a Portuguese dinner. He was a communicant of St. Patrick’s Church in Somerset. He is survived by a son, Dr. Scott Governo of Weaverville, N.C.,  and his wife Jackie; three daughters, Gayle Gibson of Brunswick, Ga., and her husband Billy, Karen Ingraham of Warwick, and Susan Boyd of Brunswick, Ga., and her husband Michael; and a brother, Gerald Governo of Westport, and his wife Anke. He was the father of the late Kevin Governo. Alan was the grandfather of Matthew Benner of Brunswick, Ga., Brandon and Corey Governo of Weaverville, N.C., and Jacob, Zachary, Ryan and Shawn Boyd of Brunswick, Ga. He was the great-grandfather of Kaitlin Martin, and Lindsey and Sarah Benner, all of Brunswick, Ga., and two nephews and three nieces. His funeral service will be held on Wednesday at 9 a.m. from the Hathaway Community Home for Funerals, 900 Buffinton Street, Somerset, followed by a Mass of Christian burial at 10 in Saint Patrick Church, 306 South Street, Somerset. Relatives and friends are invited to attend, burial to follow in Saint Patrick Cemetery Somerset. A lifelong Portsmouth resident, Jim graduated from Portsmouth High School in 1982 and earned a journalism degree from the University of Rhode Island in 1986. He's worked two different stints at East Bay Newspapers, for a total of 18 years with the company so far. When not running all over town bringing you the news from Portsmouth, Jim listens to lots and lots and lots of music, watches obscure silent films from the '20s and usually has three books going at once.
