A taste of Europe in Portsmouth — on wheels

Local couple is on the go with My Rolling Café food truck

PORTSMOUTH — Rudi and Claudia Frankenberger may be rolling into your neighborhood soon, if they haven’t already.

The Portsmouth couple owns My Rolling Café food truck, which started up last year and brings a little taste of Europe everywhere it roams.

“Our specialties are Italian gelato, sorbetto, Italian/European/German pastries, fresh-ground brewed coffee, coffee specialities like German iced coffee,” said Rudi during a recent stop at Glen Farm.

The couple came from Franconia region of Germany to the states nearly seven years ago, following their daughter, Nicole.

“Our daughter married an American guy. She lives in Portsmouth,” Rudi said.

They decided to team up and travel down a different career path in America.

“I used to be a sales manager, and Claudia used to be a kindergarten principal. So, we’re doing something very different,” Rudi said.

He purchased and old snack van and spent nearly five years restoring it until the business bloomed in July 2018.

“Business is good,” said Claudia. “Last year it was really good and now it’s a little bit slow, but it’s starting up again right now and it goes up in the summertime.”

They plan on being at the summer concerts series at Blithewold as well as the Fourth of July concert series, both in Bristol; and will also be visiting the Wickford Arts Festival in July.

However, says Rudi, “We try to stay in the area.” The food truck makes visits to Glen Farm and stops at local car shows, including the upcoming Father’s Day event at Portsmouth Abbey. They also set up their truck at Rail Explorers on the town’s west side.

Sometimes, they even run into folks from back home.

“We go to the campgrounds at Melville and it’s funny; we meet people from Germany and all over the world. They come there,” Rudi said.

My Rolling Café is also available for private functions.

“We want to do whatever people want to have. If you’re having a small party with snacks, barbecue or something else, we can do that,” Claudia said.
