Westport's Oliveira to receive Portuguese Heritage Award

Posted

For his “significant contributions to the agriculture and fishing communities” of Westport and the South Coast, Antoine “Tony” Oliveira will be presented with the Portuguese Heritage Award on June 7 at the State House.

Mr. Oliveira was nominated for the honor by State Representative Paul A. Schmid (D-Westport). It will be given to him by the Commonwealth of Massachusetts Portuguese-American Legislative Caucus on the annual Heritage Day of Portugal.

Rep. Schmid said that Mr. Oliveira, highly skilled in farming and construction services, has strong ties to the Azores where his ancestors were born and eventually immigrated to Massachusetts.

“Mr. Oliveira has been an active member of the Westport community for decades and has brought his expertise to many different facets of residential life on the South Coast,” Rep. Schmid said.

“It is fair to say that Westport would not be the agricultural and fishing community it is today, with productive farmland stretching to the river and ocean, without the presence of those hardy sailors and farmers from the Azores,” the representative said.  That is why it is a great honor to recognize Westport’s own Tony Oliveira.”

The Heritage Day of Portugal is an annual celebration to honor members of the Portuguese-American community in Massachusetts who have served as role models throughout their lives.  Legislators of the American-Portuguese Legislative Delegation nominate individuals that have contributed and advanced Portuguese values state-wide and nationally.
