The website BackgroundChecks.org recently released its list of the safest towns in Rhode Island, and ranked Barrington number four.

The website stated that its rankings were based on an analysis of FBI violent crime statistics and "proprietary BackgroundChecks.org research data."

"Rates are normalized per 100,000 residents with the state average being 219 for violent crime and 2,174 for property crime," stated the release.

Barrington was ranked fourth behind East Greenwich, Portsmouth and North Kingstown. The rest of the top 10 included Middletown (fifth), followed by Narragansett, Burrillville, Cumberland and Smithfield.

The website's release stated that the violent crime rate in Barrington 36.9, and that residents of Barrington have a 1.1 percent chance of being affected by property crime.

Other East Bay towns included on the top 20 safest communities in Rhode Island list were Bristol (11), Tiverton (19) and East Providence (20).
