Warren plans Memorial Day observances

Warren will recognize Memorial Day this Sunday and Monday with a full slate of ceremonies. They include:
Sunday, May 29
Veterans and dignitaries will meet at 9 a.m. at the Vietnam Memorial, corner of Route 136 and Market St., to start observances. Dave McCarthy will be the Master of Ceremonies, and this year’s guest speaker will be LCDR Kasim J. Yarn, USN, Rhode Island’s Director of Veterans Affairs. The opening prayer will be given by American Legion Post 104 Chaplain Col. Denise Boudreau. The National Anthem will be sung by Amanda Beaulieu-Smith, the Pledge of Allegiance by a local Boy Scout, and after the introduction of guests, LCDR Yarn will speak. Military honors will be rendered by the placing of a wreath at the Vietnam Memorial Marker, as well as a cannon salute by the United Train of Artillery and the playing of Taps by Sgt. Michael Jackson, USAF (Ret.).
Refreshments will be served in the parking lot adjacent to the Memorial Area. At approximately 9:45 a.m. attendees and the Federal Blues will proceed to the North Burial Ground where appropriate Honors will be rendered for all veterans interred there.
Monday, May 30
The Memorial Day Honors will begin at 7:45 a.m. at the Warren Town Wharf. Naval Honors will be rendered and prayers will be offered by CDR Jamie Stall-Ryan CHC USN, Naval Station Newport. This will be followed by the Navy Hymn and placing of a Wreath in the Bay by Fire Chief Al Gallinelli, former Warren Town Council member Cathy Tattrie, and other Navy Personnel. Present Arms will be followed by three volleys fired by the Federal Blues R.I. Militia. Finally, Taps will be played by Air Force veteran Sgt. Michael Jackson.
Honor roll
Ceremonies at the Town Common and town honor roll will begin at 8:15 a.m., with Military Honors for all of the town’s veterans of all wars. The Officer in Charge is BGEN. Richard Valente (Ret.) and Asst. OIC LTC John Bento, RIARNG. An invocation will be offered by U.S. Navy Chaplain Jamie Ryan-Stall, followed by the National Anthem played by the Mt. Hope High School Band. The Pledge of Allegiance will be recited by the Boy Scouts of Troop 25 and Readings of “General Order 11,” The Gettysburg Address and “Freedom Isn’t Free” will be offered.
Veterans of World War II, Korea, Vietnam, Operation Desert Storm, Operation Enduring Freedom and Operation Iraqi Freedom will place the wreaths at the Honor Roll. The Rhode Island National Guard Honor Detail will fire the Honor Volleys with Taps rendered by Sgt. Michael Jackson US Air Force (ret).
From there, the parade will step off and proceed west on State Street to Water Street, then north on Water Street to Miller Street, east on Miller Street to Main Street, then south on Main Street to Sowamsett Avenue, then east to the South Burial Ground for the Formal Honor Ceremony and Speaking Program.
South Burial Ground
At the South Burial Ground, the Master of Ceremonies will be Brig. Gen. Valente. The National Anthem will be performed by the Mt. Hope High School Band. The Invocation will be offered by Chaplain Stall-Ryan, and the Pledge of Allegiance will be given by the Boy Scouts of Troop 25. Welcome remarks will be given by Warren Town Council President Joseph DePasquale. Sen. Walter Felag and Representative Jan Malik will offer greetings. The Warren Boy and Girl Scouts will place the American flags and “America the Beautiful” will be performed by Amanda Beaulieu-Smith. General Officers present will be recognized.
The Guest Speaker is Brig. Gen. MarkJannitto (Ret) USAF.
