Candles were the cause of the blaze

EAST PROVIDENCE — East Providence Fire Department Chief Oscar Elmasian reported the cause of the fire Thursday evening, Sept. 15, on Tenth Street was improper use of candles and has been ruled accidental.

Chief Elmasian said the spark was created in the second floor of the multi-unit building. It quickly spread into the third floor, forcing the occupants of both levels out of the home. The house has been deemed uninhabitable for the time being.

Also updating the status of his firefighters, Chief Elmasian said initially two EPFD personnel were transported to hospital with injuries suffered the event. They were eventually treated and released. They are expected back on the job following a few days rest.

Chief Elmasian said a third firefighter, after returning to barracks, was also taken to hospital for injuries related to the incident. That firefighters is expected to be out for "a while," the chief added.
