Tiverton’s Dupont shines in college hammer throw

Posted

Tresley Dupont of Tiverton capped a phenomenal collegiate season and career with an 8th place finish at the NCAA Division II hammer throw National Championships held Thursday in Bradenton, Florida.

The Southern Connecticut State University senior’s best toss at the nationals went 61.81 meters (202 feet 9 inches), He had three throws over 61 meters at the event.

Impressive as that was, it was not his best. At the New England Championships, he took first place in the hammer throw with a personal best heave of 63.48 meters (208 feet, 3 inches) which would have placed him fifth at nationals. At the New Englands, the 6-foot, 240-pounder also took third in the shot put.

During his senior year he was named an All-American indoor performer and won the hammer throw and shot at the Northeast-10 Conference Championships.

Although he had high school shot put experience (Durfee High School), Dupont had never thrown the hammer before arriving at Southern Connecticut State. He was a fast learner, qualifying for nationals three times.

His 63.48 throw of that 16-pound hammer would actually have beaten the world hammer throw record (held buy a Soviet thrower) back in 1954.
