Thomas A. Gontarek Sr., 78, Little Compton

Thomas A. Gontarek Sr., 78, of Wild Cherry Lane, Little Compton, passed away Monday, June 20, 2016, at Home and Hospice of Rhode Island. He was the husband of Josephine M. (Berkauzer) Gontarek; they were married for 57 years.

Mr. Gontarek was a truck driver for 25 years for Covenant Transportation of Connecticut.

Besides his wife, he leaves one son, Kevin S. Gontarek (Susan) of Montana; his daughter-in-law, Sharon Gontarek of Bristol; one sister, Regina Granato of Pennsylvania; brother-in-law Joseph Berkauzer of Pennsylvania; four grandchildren, Justin, Ashley, Alexander and Abigail Gontarek; and two great grandchildren, Thomas and Hannah Gontarek. He was the father of the late Thomas A. Gontarek Jr.

His memorial service will be later this summer. Funeral arrangements are by Fern Acres Funeral Home of Little Compton.

A lifelong Portsmouth resident, Jim graduated from Portsmouth High School in 1982 and earned a journalism degree from the University of Rhode Island in 1986. He's worked two different stints at East Bay Newspapers, for a total of 18 years with the company so far. When not running all over town bringing you the news from Portsmouth, Jim listens to lots and lots and lots of music, watches obscure silent films from the '20s and usually has three books going at once. He also loves to cook crazy New Orleans dishes for his wife of 25 years, Michelle, and their two sons, Jake and Max.
