Stella Jayne Donovan, 80, of Rumney, N.H. and formerly of Warren and Bristol, R.I., passed away at home on Thursday, April 21, 2016.

Stella was born in Fall River, Mass., the daughter of James and Jennie (Gilroy) Hoar. She grew up in Bristol, Rhode Island, attending area schools in Bristol and after high school she went to work at J.J. Newberry's, later working as a waitress at the Wharf Tavern in Warren, the Lobster Pot in Bristol, and the Italian Farmhouse in Plymouth, N.H. for 10 years before retiring in 2010.

Stella married the love of her life, Robert, on Feb. 18, 1966 in Seekonk, Mass. After they were married they lived in Warren before moving to Rumney in 1995.

Stella loved to cook. She enjoyed writing calligraphy and coloring, and became a skilled and talented artist. She loved her garden and especially tending to her cats and dogs. She loved theater, film and traveling. Stella was also involved in local politics and loved having spirited debates with anyone who did not agree with her.

Besides her husband of 50 years, Robert, she leaves her two daughters, Susan O'Hara of Bristol and Darcy DaCosta and her husband Christopher of Warren; her beloved grandchildren, Jessica Blinkhorn of Bristol; Robert DaCosta and Elizabeth DaCosta of Warren; and her great-grandchildren, Jack and Juliet Blinkhorn, both of Bristol. Stella was predeceased by her parents and her favorite uncle Peter Gilroy.

Arrangements are with Smith Funeral & Memorial Services, 8 Schoolhouse Road, Warren, where family will receive friends from 4 to 8 p.m. Thursday, April 28. A Mass of Christian burial will be held Friday, April 29 in St Mary's Church, Wood Street, Bristol at 10 a.m. Burial will follow in St Mary's Cemetery, Bristol. Please visitĀ www.wjsmithfh.com

Jim McGaw

A lifelong Portsmouth resident, Jim graduated from Portsmouth High School in 1982 and earned a journalism degree from the University of Rhode Island in 1986. He's worked two different stints at East Bay Newspapers, for a total of 18 years with the company so far. When not running all over town bringing you the news from Portsmouth, Jim listens to lots and lots and lots of music, watches obscure silent films from the '20s and usually has three books going at once. He also loves to cook crazy New Orleans dishes for his wife of 25 years, Michelle, and their two sons, Jake and Max.
