Raymond L. Malone, of Little Compton, died in Middletown on May 22, 2016. He was the son of the late Thomas J. and Mary Jane (Jackson) Malone.
Ray was born in the coal mines of Portsmouth, baptized at St. Anthony’s Church, where his grandmother helped lay the cornerstone. He received his first communion, confirmation and served as an altar boy at the church. In his youth, Ray played baseball at Rogers High School and also in the Sunset League. He also played football for a time while attending De La Salle. He graduated from Rogers in 1941.
While serving in the U.S. Navy in World War II, he was assigned to LST338 and took part in the invasions of North Africa, Sicily and the D-Day invasion of Normandy, where he was wounded at Omaha Beach.
After the war, he graduated from Rhode Island College of Education. His teaching career began at Fredericksburg College teaching veterans on the farm before being hired by the Newport School Department to teach agriculture at Rogers. Sent by the school department to Chicago to become a driving instructor, he was proud of the fact that he was the only R.I. instructor who could give lessons in the City of Chicago. When the agriculture classes were discontinued he went on to teach science and history, as well as teaching many islanders how to drive.
Ray is the father of Thomas R. Malone and his wife Cynthia, Kathryn Jarvis, and Judy Malone, and grandfather to Jeremiah, Allison, Cassandra and Kevin and the great grandfather of Donovan. He was the husband of the late Mary Dugan, and father of the late Raymond L. Malone Jr.
He is also preceded in death by his eight brothers and sisters, L. Rita, John, Thomas, Andrew, and Paul Malone, Mary Mathewson, Celia Parrott, Helen Matley. He is survived by many nieces and nephews.
As per his wishes, funeral services will be private. A Memorial Mass will be held at a later date.
