PORTSMOUTH — Here are some highlights from the Portsmouth Police reports from over the past week.
Friday, April 29
Nisha Coons, 63, of 99 Lepes Road, was charged at 12:29 p.m. with keeping more than the allowed number of dogs permitted at the same residence, a town ordinance violation. Police were contacted March 15 by a staff member at the Potter League for Animals in Middletown regarding an anonymous complaint that more than 20 dogs were living at the home. A woman who lived at the home told police she had three Bernese mountain dogs and two others that she and her sister, Ms. Coons, were dog-sitting. Later on, however, the woman said there were a total of 19 dogs in the home, according to police. Police said the home was exceptionally clean and that the animals appeared to be in generally good health. On April 4, police determined that Ms. Coons would be allowed to have no more than six dogs on the property, and she was issued a summons to appear in Municipal Court.
Shane J. Costa, 29, of 339 Harrison St., Fall River, was charged with possession of a controlled substance, a felony, and illegal possession of a pocketknife. Mr. Costa’s car was stopped for roadway violations on West Main Road at West Passage Drive around 3:40 p.m. During a search of the vehicle, police found Clonazepam pills that Mr. Costa said belonged to his girlfriend’s mother.
Darrius L. Garner, 22, of 106 Ruggles Ave., Newport, was charged at 6:07 p.m. on a bench warrant issued from 2nd District Court. Police pulled Mr. Garner’s vehicle over on East Main Road because it was missing a front registration plate.
David A. Diaz, 22, of 137 Third St., Apt. F, Newport, was charged shortly before 7 p.m. with violating a protective order and driving after his license had been denied, suspended or revoked. Police pulled Mr. Diaz’s car over on Route 24 northbound just before the Sakonnet Bridge. Police said they clocked his car at 103 mph in a 50 mph zone. A female passenger in the car had an active protective order against Mr. Diaz, according to police.
Kimberly A. Cannon, 39, of 18 Brownell Road, Little Compton, was charged just before midnight with driving while intoxicated (first offense) and refusal to submit to a chemical test. Police said they stopped her car on Turnpike Avenue near Gorton Street because it had drifted over the double yellow lane divider.
Saturday, April 30
Gary A. Janczynski, 50, of 2 Third St., was charged with domestic assault shortly before 5 p.m. Police said Mr. Janczynski grabbed a Portsmouth woman’s arm and pushed her while attempting to get her to leave his home.
Sunday, May 1
Alyssa S. Pollard, 19, of 8 Ruth Ave., was charged at 5:19 p.m. with domestic disorderly conduct. Police made the arrest while investigating a report of a disorderly female yelling outside a Warcam Way home.
Marian E. Britton, 77, of 6 Gladding Court, Newport, was charged at 6:16 p.m. on a bench warrant issued by 2nd District Court. Police arrested Ms. Britton at the Cumberland Farms in the south end of town after receiving a report of an erratic driver.
