PORTSMOUTH — Portsmouth voters followed others statewide in throwing their support behind Democrat Bernie Sanders and Republican Donald J. Trump in Tuesday’s Presidential Preference Primary.

According to figures released by the R.i. Board of Elections, Sanders garnered 56.8 percent of the Portsmouth votes among the Democrats, while opponent Hillary Clinton collected 41.8 percent.

Sanders was also the top overall vote-getter in town, with 1,260 ballots going his way.

In the Republican contest, 908 Portsmouth voters (51.6 percent) preferred Trump. John R. Kasich came in second, with 32.5 percent, followed by Ted Cruz, with 13.8 percent.

The mail ballots will be certified at the state Board of Elections Wednesday, according to Jacqueline S. Schulz, registrar of voters.

The local results generally mirrored how voters felt statewide. With 75 percent of the 144 precincts reporting at about 9:30 p.m., Sanders was ahead of Clinton among the Democrats, 54.8 to 43 percent.

In the statewide Republican contest, Trump was ahead comfortably, with 63.8 percent of the vote. Kasich was in second with 23.8 percent, followed by Ted Cruz with 10.7 percent.
