PORTSMOUTH — The Portsmouth Board of Canvassers has found “sufficient evidence” that a single case of voter fraud took place here during the Nov. 8 election and will ask local police to investigate further.
The three-member panel met this afternoon in an executive session attended by board members E. Richard Carpender (chairman), Glenn Allen and Regina Shers, along with Registrar of Voters Jacqueline Schulz and staff member Barbara Sherman.
In an e-mailed message following the meeting, Mr. Carpender released the following statement:
“At the meeting the Board was presented with documentation and materials relative to the situation in question.
“After considering the materials and presentation, the Board concluded that there was sufficient evidence and concern that warranted moving the situation forward to the local law enforcement agency; in this case, the Portsmouth Police Department for a thorough investigation."
“There is no evidence that this is a pattern of voter fraud, but rather a single case.”
He added that neither the board, nor Ms Schulz, will make any further comments on the matter during the open investigation.
In an e-mailed message Friday afternoon, Police Chief Thomas Lee said his department had not yet received any correspondence from the Board of Canvassers.
