PORTSMOUTH — Vincent Downs-Honey was a runner-up in two races to power Portsmouth High School to a fourth-place finish in the state swimming championships Saturday at Brown University.

The day started with Downs-Honey and teammates John Gilpin, Eamon McKenney and Jake Steen combining to finish fourth in the 200-yard medley relay with a time of 1 minute, 41.63 seconds.

Downs-Honey then took second in the 200-yard freestyle with a time of 1:47.84, followed by another second-place finish in the 100-yard backstroke (52.46).

He then teamed up again with Gilpin, McKenney and Steen to take fourth place in the 400-yard freestyle relay with a time of 3:22.7.

McKenney came in third in the 50-yard freestyle with a time of 22.10 seconds.

Here’s how the PHS boys fared in other events:

• Steen placed fifth in the 200-yard individual medley (2.04.96) and seventh in the 100-yard freestyle (50.13).

• Gilpin came in 15th in the 500-yard freestyle (5:44.1).

• Ryan Alexander, John Boruch, Eric Kasischke and Ruairi MacMillan came in 14th in the 200-yard freestyle relay with a time of 1:42.67.

The PHS girls managed 10 points Saturday for their performances in two relay events.

In the 200-yard medley relay, Bridget Madden, Amelia Reed, Ashlyn Rogers and Claire Williams took 13th place in a time of 1:54.96

Madden and Rogers teamed up with Isabella Martin and Avery Boruch to take 16th place in the 400-yard freestyle relay in a time of 4:31.33.
