PORTSMOUTH — Ever wanted to experience for yourself what day-to-day law enforcement work is like?

You’ll have your chance when the Portsmouth Police Department conducts another Citizens Police Academy beginning Tuesday, March 7.

The 10-week program allows citizens to learn and experience the inner world of law enforcement and provides a firsthand look at the daily operations of the Portsmouth Police Department.

The training will consist of classroom instruction, demonstrations, tours, as well as hands-on practical applications. Instructors will be members of the Portsmouth Police Department, including patrol officers, supervisors and administrators. Some of the topics to be offered include:

• Uniformed patrol

• Crime scene investigations

• Accident investigations

• Traffic codes

• Harbor patrol functions

• Domestic violence

• DUI enforcement

• Firearms safety

• Mock crime scene scenarios

The academy is open to people who are 18 years of age or older, who live or work in Portsmouth and have no prior felony convictions.

Classes run from 6:30-8:30 p.m. on Tuesdays from March 7 to May 9 at the Portsmouth Police Headquarters, 2270 East Main Road.
