PORTSMOUTH — The Portsmouth Little League 10-year-old All-Star team won the District 2 title Monday night by defeating Barrington 5-2 at Sherman Field.

Portsmouth started off quickly and controlled the tempo of the game. In the bottom of the first, Nick Spaner walked for Portsmouth before stealing second and third. He then came around to score on a Shane Harvey single to make it 1-0.

Barrington tied it up in the top of the second and threatened to score again in the third inning after a leadoff double. However, Portsmouth got out of the jam quickly when a base hit to centerfield was relayed quickly from centerfielder Jay Humm to third baseman Seth Whittington to catcher Spaner for the putout.

In the Portsmouth half of the third, Spaner singled, then came around to score on a John Mass triple, making it 2-1, Portsmouth. Whittington drove in Mass with a single of his own to make it 3-1.

Barrington scored one in the top of the fourth drawing to make it a one-run game, but that’s as close as the team would get.

Humm doubled to begin the bottom of the fourth inning and after George Smith walked, made his way to third. Spaner pushed Humm across on a fielder's choice, making it 4-2.

In the bottom of the fifth, the locals added one more for good measure. Shane Harvey doubled off the centerfield fence and came around to score on an overthrow to third base on his stolen base attempt.

On the mound, Harvey pitched 5-2/3 innings, striking out four and walking one. Mass shut the door, striking out the final batter for the save.

Portsmouth advances to the state tournament starting Saturday, July 23.

"These boys are an absolute joy to coach,” said manager Craig Spaner. “They personify and are the epitome of team play. They are there for each other and being friends on and off the field certainly contributes to that.

“They do the little things: backing up, taking the extra base, hitting cutoffs, and they never give up — on themselves or each other. They believe in each other and I couldn't be happier for their accomplishments.”

He said it’s an honor for the team to represent Portsmouth and District 2 in the state tournament.

“These boys are out there having fun, playing ball with their buddies, and they're loving it. And that's really what it's all about — pure joy,” he said.

The Portsmouth team consists of Ryan Bolusky, Luke Brennan, John Cawley, Derek Gesmondi, Shane Harvey, Jack Humm, Jay Humm, John Mass, George Smith, Nick Spaner, Connor Swider and Seth Whittington. Coaches are Mike Brennan and Jim Mass. The Portsmouth manager is Craig Spaner.
