Convicted animal cruelty offender allegedly missed appointments tied to his release

EAST PROVIDENCE — According to media reports, East Providence resident Anthony Stravato, who served eight months in jail on animal cruelty charges, was arrested earlier this week for violating bail after he was released from custody just this month.

Mr. Stravato, who was convicted for the 2014 killing of his family cat among other charges, was arrested by East Providence Police at the Rumford Inn on Newport Avenue in city on Wednesday, Aug. 24. The state's attorney general's office had issued a warrant seeking to detain Mr. Stravato after he failed to show for mental health and probationary appointments subject to being paroled on August 5, an article at The Providence Journal's website cited on Friday, Aug. 26.

Mr. Stravato's release from prison made headlines at the time after local law enforcement and animal rights groups issued stern warnings to residents in both East Providence and Warren, where his girlfriend is believed to reside, about the chances he may perform acts of cruelty once again.
