Phyllis Freeman, 89, formerly of Bristol

Phyllis Maureen (Gravengaard) Freeman died peacefully at Apple Rehab Watch Hill on May 9, 2016 in Westerly, RI, at the age of 89.

Phyllis Freeman was born on Sept. 6, 1926 in Des Moines, Iowa, to Elmer and Elisa (Hansen) Gravengaard. Phyllis found happiness in her family, cooking, gardening and traveling. She was past president of the Bristol Garden Club and a member of the First Congregational Church. She worked as an administrative assistant at Brown University and as real estate agent. Most recently, Phyllis lived in Florida where she enjoyed collecting seashells and playing golf.

Phyllis is survived by her children, Craig P. Freeman of Newport, Lisa Freeman Huftalen and husband Howard B. Huftalen, Jr. of Hope Valley, Drew J. Freeman and wife Deborah Seppi Freeman of Ft. Lauderdale, Fla., Nancy L. Freeman and husband David S. Reis of Westerly; three grandchildren and three great grandchildren. Phyllis was preceded in death by first husband Paul E. Freeman, second husband John R. Coffey, and sisters Beverly Brower and Sonja MacClannahan.

A brief memorial will be held at The Veterans Cemetery Chapel in Exeter, RI on Friday, May 20 at 11:30 a.m.

A lifelong Portsmouth resident, Jim graduated from Portsmouth High School in 1982 and earned a journalism degree from the University of Rhode Island in 1986. He's worked two different stints at East Bay Newspapers, for a total of 18 years with the company so far. When not running all over town bringing you the news from Portsmouth, Jim listens to lots and lots and lots of music, watches obscure silent films from the '20s and usually has three books going at once. He also loves to cook crazy New Orleans dishes for his wife of 25 years, Michelle, and their two sons, Jake and Max.
