Police received a call from a motorist who was driving by the home at about 8:20 a.m. — the motorist said he observed a man whose arms and feet appeared to be on fire. Emergency responders discovered the man had been attempting to foot a ladder near the home when the ladder rocked backward and struck a nearby power line.

The painter — a 47-year-old Pawtucket man — told police that after the ladder struck the power line he felt a jolt in his legs and quickly released the ladder. Sparks flew from the line and the ladder reportedly bounced back to the side of the house.

Police said the man appeared to be injured but refused transport to the hospital.
