OLMC Feast planned on Bristol Town Common

The parish names chief marshals, ‘Faith in Action’ winners

In a few short weeks, Our Lady of Mt. Carmel Church will be celebrating its 118th annual church Feast, the longest continuous religious celebration of its kind in the Diocese of Providence. The feast will be held July 14 through July 17 under the big top on the Bristol Town Common.

This year’s Chief Marshals, Patrick “Pat” and Nina (Squatrito) McCarthy, have the honor of leading the celebration. Both are ecstatic about receiving the highest honor that can be bestowed as a parishioner of the church.

“I hold the Blessed Mother very close and dear to my heart and my life’s purpose,” said Nina, the third and final sibling from one family (Squatrito), and a member of the first family to have all siblings and their spouses serve as OLMC’s chief marshals. “So, to lead our parish in celebration this year as chief marshals in Our Lady’s honor, is a blessing and inspiration to do more for others.”

From an historical perspective, Nina’s brother, Jerome Squatrito (2000) and sister Joyce Simoes (2008), along with their spouses, Elaine and David, respectfully, have served as chief marshals.

Pat McCarthy is equally thrilled and honored to share in this momentous occasion.

“I have every intention of giving back,” he said. “My family and I have been so blessed. We keep the faith, we practice our faith. We’re not going to fall short in committing to our faith.”

Pat is also the first communicant of Our Lady of Mt. Carmel Church, and the first Bristolian from any of the three Roman Catholic Churches in Bristol, to be honored with the Diocese of Providence’s Lumen Gentium Service Award for 2016. He received this honor recently as one of 15 recipients at the diocese’s annual awards banquet at the Twin River Event Center.

As part of the consideration for selecting the McCarthys as chief marshals this year, OLMC Rev. Henry P. Zinno, Jr. noted it was Mr. McCarthy’s important role as the OLMC’s first Energy Efficiency Manager for the entire OLMC campus buildings.

Mr. McCarthy is a member of the church’s Finance Council, Energy Efficiency Manager, Mass Offering Counter, Feast Committee, and a 40-year member of the Knights of Columbus (recently receiving the 4th Degree Exemplification). He also acted as the OLMC School’s solar array field panel roof installation project manager.

Mrs. McCarthy is a graduate of OLMC School and has received all the religious sacraments, including her marriage to Mr. McCarthy at Our Lady of Mt. Carmel Church in May 1981. The couple is marking its 35th wedding anniversary this year. She is also an annual Feast Committee member, Altar Society member, OLMC school volunteer, and Mass offering counter.

Currently, Nina McCarthy is a flight attendant with Delta Airlines, while Pat McCarthy is with the management team at Electric Boat Corporation. The couple has two adult children, Patrick II and Tara.

“Pat and Nina have been involved in our parish in so many ways for so many years and certainly have been so supportive and committed to the feast every year,” said Father Zinno. “We congratulate them on this wonderful honor in leading our feast this year.”

Father Zinno said he is also happy to announce this year’s recipients of the Thomas Vendituoli “Faith in Action” Award are husband and wife, Zachary and Elise Augustine.

The award, according to Father Zinno, is given by Our Lady of Mount Carmel Church to people 30 years of age or younger who display the qualities of putting their faith into action.

Mr. Augustine, a lawyer with a degree from Roger Williams University School of Law, worked for the Pontifical North American College, United States Conference of Catholic Bishops. He is a Eucharistic Minister and has studied Canon Law in Rome, Italy, and the Vatican City State.

Mrs. Augustine received her Bachelor’s degree in 2009 from Merrimack College, North Andover, MA. In 2009, she earned her Master’s degree from Brandeis University. She sings in the Mount Carmel choir and is an active flutist throughout the Diocese of Providence.

The Augustines met at Our Lady of Mount Carmel. They were later engaged and married in the parish. Together, they teach in the Mount Carmel confirmation program.
