Commander Norman B. Pigeon, USN (Ret.), of Clinton, SC, passed away on April 29, 2016, following an extended illness. He was 79 years old.

Norman was born on November 24, 1936 to Roger Warren Pigeon and Antonia Anne Yonis Pigeon in Newton, Mass. He was a resident of Bristol until 1955, when he enlisted in the U.S. Army. He entered the U.S. Naval Academy in 1957, graduated with the Class of 1961 (13th Company) and was commissioned as an ensign in the U.S. Navy. While serving as a naval officer, Norman was awarded a Master of Physical Oceanography at the U.S. Naval Postgraduate School in 1967 and a Master of Marine Affairs at the University of Rhode Island in 1974. After serving his country, he retired as commander in 1979 and moved to Greenville, SC.

Following retirement, Norman served as NJROTC instructor at Parker and Greenville high schools for 10 years. After again retiring and moving to Clinton, SC, Norman continued sharing his knowledge and enthusiasm for education by teaching oceanography and algebra at USC Union.

Norman was committed to serving his community, as evidenced by his service on committees and boards and by his church activities. He was a life member of the U.S. Naval Academy Alumni Association, American Legion (Post 56) and the National Society, Sons of the American Revolution.

He is survived by his wife, Le Ann Ostby Watson; brother Charles Warren Pigeon (and his wife, Susan) of Ft. Myers, Fla.; sons Scott (and his wife, Therese) of Central, SC, and Todd (and his wife, Jennie) of Santiago, Chile; and six grandchildren, Bryce, Reid, Grant, Nicholas, Benjamin and Claire Marie. Norman was predeceased by his siblings, Sidney Gardner and Carol Ann Pigeon.

A memorial service will be held at 10 a.m. on June 25 at All Saints Episcopal Church in Clinton, with interment in the family plot in Bristol.

Memorials are requested to All Saints Episcopal Church, 505 Calvert Ave., Clinton, SC 29325 (www.allsaintsclinton.org ); or to the charity of one’s choice.
