No cheers after someone steals home base in Portsmouth

PORTSMOUTH — Here are some highlights from the Portsmouth Police report from over the past week.

Tuesday, July 19

Someone stole home on the Portsmouth High School baseball field — literally. Police responded to PHS just before noon to investigate a report that home plate had been taken. Athletic Director Stephen Trezvant said he learned about the theft from ITZ, a company that was holding a game at the field, and that the plate probably went missing around July 4. The plate was valued at about $50.

Wednesday, July 20

Gregory S. Moniz, 21, of 438 Walcott Ave., Middletown, was charged at 6:05 p.m. with making crank or obscene phone calls. Police said he called a 47-year-old Portsmouth woman and harassed her about money he was ordered to pay her after he got evicted from her residence.

Thursday, July 21

Paul E. Melo, 37, of 1728 Frank Watts Road, Knoxville, Tenn., was charged at 1:43 a.m. with driving while intoxicated (first offense). Police stopped his car in the parking lot of Subway on East Main Road after it was seen leaving the lane of travel.

Friday, July 22

Cameron L. Crehan, 25, of 614 Pond St., Apt. 1119, Braintree, Mass., was charged at 2:04 a.m. with driving while intoxicated (first offense). Police said Mr. Crehan’s car left the lane of travel, so they pulled him over on Route 24 northbound at Sprague Street.

Richard L Duarte, 36, of 124 Sherwood Drive, was charged at 8:29 a.m. with allowing a dog to run at large, a town ordinance violation, and failing to license his dog. The charges stem from a report first filed on May 29, when a woman told police she had found a loose dog, with no tags, walking in her neighborhood. Police took custody of the border collie and placed it in the kennel behind headquarters. Mr. Duarte came to the station later that day to retrieve the pet, and was told the dog needed to be registered with the town. According to police, the dog was still not licensed by June 21, when Animal Control Officer Ariel Fisher issued a fine for the two charges. On July 5, another warning letter was issued and on July 22, she issued a Municipal Court summons, police said.

Randy S. Bostock, 49, of 2 Debra Drive, was charged at 4:28 p.m. with larceny of under $1,500 and obstructing an officer in the execution of duties. Police responded to Shinya Yoga at Clock Tower Square shortly before 4 p.m. for a report of a larceny in progress. Police said a man attending a yoga session said his black wallet, which he placed on a bench inside the front entrance to the studio, was stolen when he left the building to make a trip to his vehicle. The man told police that as he walked outside, he noticed a man later identified as Mr. Bostock sit on the chair outside the studio. When he returned, he saw Mr. Bostock exit the studio, and he couldn’t find his wallet, according to police. The wallet contained about $20 to $25 in cash and two credit cards. Police later found Mr. Bostock walking on King Charles Drive — with fresh scratches on his arms and legs which appeared to have come from briers — and took him into custody. Mr. Bostock acknowledged to police that he had left the studio earlier, but denied taking the wallet.

Saturday, July 23

Sheryl L. Wilkes, 51, of 1847 Quebec Court, Middleburg, Fla., was charged at 2:02 a.m. with driving while intoxicated (first offense) after her car hit some downed power lines on East Main Road at President Avenue. Two police officers were already on the scene after a large tree fell onto the lines during a severe storm. They tried to stop Ms. Wilkes’ vehicle before she struck the lines, to no avail. She continued to drive south on East Main Road before pulling into the parking lot of Patriot Petroleum, police said.

Hilary M. Ward, 34, of 31 Valley Lane, was charged at 5:51 a.m. on a bench warrant issued by 2nd District Court. An officer with knowledge of the warrant arrested her at her home.

Sunday, July 24

Marc D. Wagnac, 30, of 2 Oneida St., Johnson, was charged at 1:07 a.m. with driving with a suspended license. His car was stopped on West Main Road near Twin Lantern Cabins because its rear lights were not working, police said.

Corey J. Almeida, 25, of 363 Child St., Apt. 1B, Warren, was charged at 1:10 a.m. with driving while intoxicated (second offense), resisting arrest and refusal to submit to a chemical test. Police said they pulled Mr. Almeida over on Maple Drive, off Boyd’s Lane, after he was clocked traveling 82 mph on West Main Road. When police told him he would not be able to smoke a cigarette while being searched, Mr. Almeida pulled both arms away from an officer and attempted to walk away, according to police.
