Margaret H. “Peg” Brady, 87, wife of John F. Brady, passed away peacefully on Tuesday, April 26, 2016, at home surrounded by her loving family.

Peg was born in Taunton, Massachusetts, on June 11, 1928, the daughter of the late F. Hamilton and Margaret V. Lane and sister of the late F. Hamilton Lane II. She attended Catholic schools in Taunton, graduating from St. Mary’s High School in June 1946. Peg went on to graduate from Emmanuel College in Boston with a degree in English in 1950. She taught elementary grades in Taunton and, after marriage, in Aquidneck Island schools.

Peg married John F. Brady in 1952 and moved to Middletown. For the last 60 years they lived in Portsmouth where she stayed at home to raise her family. Peg loved outdoor sports — tennis, swimming, skiing, cruising and racing sailboats.

In 1955, Peg and John founded the Newport Ski Club. Peg taught their four children and nine grandchildren to ski when at the club lodge in Vermont. Peg and her husband John were founding members of St. Barnabas Church in Portsmouth. Peg taught in the church’s Religious Education program and for many years was its volunteer director. A daily communicant, Peg also was very active in the church’s St. Vincent de Paul Society.

Peg was a member of the Newport Hospital Auxiliary where she chaired the Newport Hospital Ball and ran their horticultural therapy program. An avid tennis player and fan, Peg was also a volunteer at the Newport Tennis Hall of Fame for 25 years. She and John were members of the Tiverton Yacht Club for 50 years. In addition, Peg was a member of the Portsmouth Glen Manor House Authority for over 25 years, participating in fundraising and other activities to support the restoration and preservation of the Glen Manor House.

Although Peg was very active in civic and parish activities, enjoying her family was her favorite pastime. She was famous for her homemade “Nana cookies” and treats mailed to all her grandchildren for every holiday, as well being their number one cheerleader and supporter at all their extra-curricular events.

Beside her husband, John, of almost 64 years, Peg leaves her daughter, Anne M. Brady and partner, Kevin Oakes, both of Binghamton NY, Kathleen T. Brady of West Warwick, Patricia M. Brady of Barrington, Mary Helene Chaplin and husband Todd of Portsmouth. She also leaves eight granddaughters, Kristen Romanelli and husband David Kociemba of Watertown, Mass., Meghan Romanelli and wife Karen Wollemborg of Brooklyn, NY, Mikaela Romanelli of Philadelphia, Penn., Katherine Wilhelm and Kiera Wilhelm of Minneapolis Minn., Abigail Wilhelm of Barrington, Allison Chaplin of Providence, and Melissa Chaplin of Newport. Peg’s one grandson, Andrew Chaplin, lives in Sacramento, Calif.

Visiting hours will be held on Friday April 29, at the Connors Funeral Home on 55 West Main Road in Portsmouth from 4 to 7 p.m.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at St. Barnabas Church, 1697 East Main Road, Portsmouth, on Saturday, April 30, at 10 a.m. Burial will follow at St. Columba Cemetery, Middletown.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the St. Barnabas St. Vincent de Paul Society or to the Visiting Nurse Service of Newport County & Bristol County.
