Letter: Serious questions for yoga pants paraders

To the editor:

To the men and women who marched in protest to Alan Sorrentino's editorial regarding yoga pants, I ask you this...

Have you ever seen a woman in a sari or a man in a turban and disliked it? Does that make you a xenophobe?

Have you ever seen a man with his pants so low that his boxers were showing and thought that it was inappropriate? Does that mean that you hate men?

If the person wearing those pants was black, did you consider yourself a racist?

There are as many different opinions about clothing as there are people. It doesn't mean that they hold some prejudice against the people who wear the clothing that they don't like. It is a leap, and unwarranted, to accuse Mr. Sorrentino of being a misogynist.

Furthermore, Mr. Sorrentino did not express his opinion as an elected official or in some capacity or role where it might have been inappropriate. He expressed his opinion as a private citizen in a forum that is intended specifically for that purpose. I don't know anything about Mr. Sorrentino, but I do know that he has a right to his opinion. Similarly, anyone who disagrees with his opinion also has the right to express it in the same forum.

Another question I have for the protesters is this:

What other social injustices have you protested against in the past? What are the other causes that you have found so disturbing that it compelled you to leave your home in protest?

If the answer is none, and the editorial about yoga pants was the ONE THING that drove you to action, I suggest you open a newspaper other than the Barrington Times, watch the world news, or venture into a local town that has bigger problems than a man who doesn't like yoga pants. There are way more important issues out there that need your voice.
