To the editor:

This year, the Portsmouth Historical Society has held, sponsored or supported several events relating to Portsmouth history, with two more yet to come.

On Wednesday, Nov. 2, Society President and Town Historian Jim Garman will be presenting a photographic lecture on “Portsmouth: A Hundred Years Ago,” using some of his rare photographs of Portsmouth in the early 1900s.

On Thursday. Dec. 15, he will give another lecture on Portsmouth history, this time on “Island Park in the early 1900s.” Both lectures will be held at the Portsmouth Free Public Library from 6:30 to 7:30 p.m. Please save the dates and join us to learn more about Portsmouth’s past.

These two lectures are free and open to the public but space at the library is limited so please call 401/683-9457 to reserve your seat. And please visit our website at www.portsmouthhistorical.org to take our survey and tell us what kind of events or subjects you would like us to offer in 2017.

Jim McGaw

A lifelong Portsmouth resident, Jim graduated from Portsmouth High School in 1982 and earned a journalism degree from the University of Rhode Island in 1986. He's worked two different stints at East Bay Newspapers, for a total of 18 years with the company so far. When not running all over town bringing you the news from Portsmouth, Jim listens to lots and lots and lots of music, watches obscure silent films from the '20s and usually has three books going at once. He also loves to cook crazy New Orleans dishes for his wife of 25 years, Michelle, and their two sons, Jake and Max.
