To the editor:
I recently joined the Portsmouth Concerned Citizens organization, otherwise know as the PCC. I wanted to know more about the town, be informed and help in any way I could.
I was pleased to find it to be a nonpartisan group. Sometimes there is not a like mind in the group, but we all sit and discuss the item in question politely, calmly and in a nonpartisan way. Items such as school funding, gun control, taxes, illegal immigration and municipal projects make for some lively discussions. All views are put on the table with the main goal being what is best for Portsmouth and its future. Numerous studies, facts and presentations are made that enable informed decision-making.
Lately, political candidates have been scheduled for talks and take questions from PCC members who are independents, Democrats and Republicans alike. It is unfortunate that not all the political parties will visit and be questioned by all sides. It is hard to even consider voting for a candidate who isn’t strong enough in their beliefs to show up at a non-partisan event and explain their positions. I’ve learned a lot by attending these forums and get to know how other people think. I don’t consider them “the opposition” and find that the group works as a cohesive unit in the best interests of the town.
The PCC has been misrepresented during this election cycle. The people criticizing the PCC don’t attend or belong to the group, so how they can criticize it is beyond me. Get to know the PCC.
