Letter: Increasing recycling surest way to save town money

Posted

To the editor,
The Rhode Island Resource Recovery Corporation has officially announced that it will increase the landfill’s tipping fees beginning on July 1, 2017. Based on current projections, this increase will result in an additional expense of $103,425.00 by 2019!
So, what can we do?
Since the new ordinance that went into effect last year requiring residents to recycle, we have seen our recycling rates increase to 28 percent! That’s a 50 percent increase from prior years, so, yes, we’ve made progress, but we must not lose momentum. We must get our recycling rate to 35 percent, as it is the surest way to fend off that increased fees for garbage going to the landfill.
We have little time reach that goal, so let’s get to work and strengthen our efforts to get all recyclables and compostable material out of our trash! When we all do our part, we can save real tax dollars!
The Bristol Recycles Committee is renewing its efforts, so stay tuned for more information and events in the coming weeks and months. But please don’t wait … recycle more now! Help your family, friends and neighbors recycle more! It’s very easy and goes a long way toward offsetting the expense we know is coming our way!
