Letter: Help save soldiers who work to save us

To the editor:

This past year, more than 470 active-duty Service members, National Guard and Reservists lost their battle with depression and post-traumatic stress disorder and took their own lives out of hopelessness and desperation.

The Matthew Patton Foundation was founded in 2015 to honor the memory of our son, Sgt. Matthew Patton, who is one casualty of these physical and psychological wounds of war. It is the mission of the foundation to solve mental health issues identified by active-duty and veteran Service members, and their families, to better serve their needs and prevent negative consequences. MPF is dedicated to providing education and advocacy through multiple platforms using a public health model to help our active-duty and veteran Service members, and their families, achieve their best mental health states, end the stigma, and stop military suicide. This year, through our direct action and in conjunction with a coalition of caring individuals and organizations, we have saved at least 11 soldiers from Matthew's fate.

We hope that you will be able to help us by attending a pasta dinner and auction this Saturday, Dec. 3, 6-11 p.m., at the Almeida VFW Post, 850 Hope St. Your $25 donation covers your meal and entertainment with Tyler and Ryan Falcoa and tunes from G3 Entertainment. We also are holding a 50/50 raffle, individual raffle prizes and a silent auction.

We hope to see you there. If you are unable to attend the event, you may still make a contribution to the foundation at www.matthewpattonfoundation.org, or by mail at PO Box 797, Bristol RI 02809.

They fought for us, now it is time for us to fight for them.
