Letter: Democrats have shifted their political philosophy

Posted

To the editor:

As an independent voter, who selects from both political parties, I feel it's important to point out that in Portsmouth and elsewhere, there has been a major shift in the Democratic Party. What has occurred is the introduction of the liberal progressive movement into the party philosophy.

This movement has been increasing gradually on the state level for several years. Unfortunately, here in Portsmouth under the guidance of Democratic Chairman Leonard Katzman, some of our candidates for Portsmouth Town Council support this top-down big government position.

It's unfortunate that Mr. Katzman discouraged these candidates from participating in open forums where the public could have posed questions regarding their individual goals, which runs contrary to their position of supporting open government. In addition, candidate James Seveney, candidate for R.I. state senator, is a stated supporter of the liberal progressive movement.

Some of the goals of this movement are rescinding the Second Amendment (while there is a need for good safety guidelines, do we really want to rescind the Second Amendment?); affecting changes that will impact global warming; support for abortion and Planned Parenthood.

Elections have consequences. Bigger government comes with bigger budgets. There are presently seven states larger (in population) than R.I. with far lower state taxes. We are now at $9 billion per year for this little state. Bigger government and its partner, higher taxes, discourage investment and growth, but most of all the average citizen.
