To the editor:
The coverage of our event that was attended by close to 300 citizens this year was basically a footnote in a story about the dedication of the Blue Star Memorial by the local garden clubs. A worthy event but an add-on activity to our annual events.
I appreciate the use of a random but unattributed shot of our marine color guard but other than that our ceremony was basically ignored by your paper. The rain may have cancelled our parade but it did not cancel the underlying reason for the official recognition of Memorial Day.
Our keynote speaker was praised by all who had attended. We had the high school band and choruses perform patriotic songs and the feedback we received from our attendees to include our congressional delegation and local representatives was all positive. Despite the rainout we respectfully honored the 52 citizens who gave their lives defending our freedoms.
This is two years in a row our Memorial Day activities have received short shift by the Barrington Times.
As we struggle to protect and promulgate the true reason for the long weekend, it is is extremely disheartening to be virtually ignored by our local media.
Memorial Day is not about celebrating the graduating BHS class, recognizing the local Little League teams, or even the local Boy and Girl Scout troops. It is not about cookouts, going to the beach, gardening or retail sales.
It is about honoring those whose voices were silenced way too soon, those whose seats will be empty at the family cookouts, those who will not see their sons and daughters play their next Little League game or even get a chance to watch their children graduate from high school.
It is to recognize and honor those who have paid the ultimate sacrifice and to them we owe an eternal debt of gratitude.
By the way, when was the last time you were in attendance at one of our events?
Sincerely,
Paul Dulchinos
Barrington
