Rescued in Warren, bird on mend with Portsmouth rehabilitator

A young male pigeon is on its way back to health after it was saved from several young boys who were spotted kicking and spitting at it last Tuesday afternoon.
Kristin Fletcher, the executive director of the Wildlife Rehabilitators Association of Rhode Island, took the bird back to her home in Portsmouth after police got a call last Tuesday afternoon that boys were kicking at it near the Kickemuit Middle School. The bird was handed over to her by Warren’s animal control officer.
“I could feel some bruising on the left wing and some swelling,” she said. “It’s possible the bird was already injured and the boys were able to come up on it.”
After a week of care and medication, the young pigeon is responding well to care.
“My hope for him is that we’ll be able to place him” in a loving home, she said. It’s also possible that the owner will hear about the case and come forward at some point, as the bird is banded and was definitely domesticated.
“He could be a Warren bird. I don’t know.”
Police logs indicate that at least one of the boys involved was brought home to his parents.
Note: The Wildlife Rehabilitators Association of Rhode Island takes in animals from across the state, relying solely on donations to keep the lights on. To learn more about the organization, see www.riwildliferehab.org.
