Hugh C. Neville, 81, of Barrington died Saturday, July 23, 2016. He was the husband of Ruth (Shaw) Neville for 59 years. Born in Fall River he was the son of the late Hugh and Dorothea (Hurst) Neville.

A graduate of Durfee High School, Fall River, St. George’s School, Middletown and the University of Rhode Island, he served as a captain in the US Army and spent most of his lifetime as a business owner and entrepreneur.

He was a former member of the Tiverton Yacht Club and is a member of the Barrington Yacht Club and the Rhode Island Country Club. A lifelong athlete, Hugh excelled at yachting, golfing, squash, and skiing.

Besides his wife he leaves a son, Hugh "Skip" Neville II and his wife Donna of Barrington, two daughters, Pamela Neville and her husband Paul Bowser of Barrington, Wendy Kraunelis and her husband Leo Jr. of Topsfield, Mass.,  a sister, Sandra Carpentier of Cornish, NH, a brother, Dana Neville of Westport, Mass., and 6 grandchildren, Hugh Conant Neville III of Skagway, Alaska, LTJG Lillian Neville, USN, Leo (Jay) Kraunelis of Topsfield, Mass.,  Katelyn Kraunelis of Brooklyn, NY, and Andrew and AnnaLeigh Bowse­r, both of Barrington.  

A celebration of Hugh’s life will be held at the Barrington Yacht Club at 1:30 p.m. on Friday, July 29 for family and friends. Burial will be private. Memorial contributions to the Tiverton Yacht Club Building Fund, 58 Riverside Drive, Tiverton, RI 02878 would be welcomed. Visit www.smithmason.com for online condolences.

A lifelong Portsmouth resident, Jim graduated from Portsmouth High School in 1982 and earned a journalism degree from the University of Rhode Island in 1986. He's worked two different stints at East Bay Newspapers, for a total of 18 years with the company so far. When not running all over town bringing you the news from Portsmouth, Jim listens to lots and lots and lots of music, watches obscure silent films from the '20s and usually has three books going at once. He also loves to cook crazy New Orleans dishes for his wife of 25 years, Michelle, and their two sons, Jake and Max.
