PORTSMOUTH — Monday was the first day local residents could declare their candidacy for public office in the November 2016 general election.
Here’s who filed Monday, according to Jacqueline S. Schulz, Portsmouth’s registrar of voters. Those who wish to run still have until the end of the day on Wednesday, June 29, to file candidacy papers.
Town Council
Incumbent Kevin M. Aguiar (D), of 770 Bristol Ferry Road; incumbent Keith Hamilton (R), of 134 Soares Drive; Leonard B. Katzman (D), of 172 Spring Hill Road; John G. McDaid (D), of 65 Gormley Ave.; John Lane McMahon (D), of 2651 East Main Road; J. Mark Ryan (D), of 155 Adams Drive; Judith J Staven (unaffiliated), of 51 Long Meadow Road; Linda L. Ujifusa (D), of 155 Adams Drive; and Elias J. Wheeler (D), of 28 Sprague St.
School Committee
Incumbent Emily A. Copeland (D), of 25 Windstone Drive; incumbent Terri-Denise Cortvriend (D), of 46 Mary Lane; incumbent Andrew V. Kelly (D), of 33 Pine St.; and Allen J. Shers (R), of 40 Roger Williams Court
Mr. Shers, who was appointed by the Town Council in October 2015 to fill a vacated seat on the School Committee, is running to fill a two-year unexpired term, not a four-year term.

John A. Pagliarini, Jr., of Tiverton announced his reelection bid for District 11 after filing his candidacy papers at Tiverton Town Hall. Mr. Pagliarini defeated Mr. Seveney in a special election in January to fill the unexpired term of Christopher Ottiano, who resigned the seat due to a potential conflict of interest with a new job.
In other news, Bristol resident Antonio “Tony” Avila (R) announced his candidacy for the House District 69 seat.
