Helyn Shelmerdine Holahan, Tiverton

Helyn Shelmerdine Holahan took her final step to heaven with family by her side on October 18, 2016, in Dover-Foxcroft, Maine. Born on February 26, 1924, in Fall River, she was the oldest child of Raymond and Eunice (Gifford) Shelmerdine and wife of the late John A. Holahan. She was a resident of Tiverton for over 70 years.

Helyn worked for many years as an office clerk in the Fall River area before retiring from the North Tiverton Fire District.

For nearly 30 years she was a volunteer at Holy Trinity Episcopal Church’s thrift shop – the Trinity Trader. Her favorite winter pasttime was knitting mittens for the shop.

She loved working in her large yard filled with shrubs, flowers, and vegetables. When no longer able to pursue these activities she enjoyed watching the local wildlife pass through her yard.

This past summer she spent an extended stay with family in Dover-Foxcroft, Maine “having fun”.

She was predeceased by her parents, husband, and siblings: brother, Raymond, and sisters, Virginia Botelho and Phyllis Hill. She is survived by her daughter and son-in-law Judith and Edward Hummel of Maine, and several nieces and nephews of Oklahoma.

Memorial donations may be made to the Holy Trinity Episcopal Church’s Capital Improvement Fund, 1956 Main Road, Tiverton, RI 02878 or a charity of one’s choice. Helyn spent most of her life giving to and helping others, never expecting anything in return. In her memory please consider an act of kindness to someone.

Spring graveside services will take place at the Pocasset Hill Cemetery, Tiverton.
