PROVIDENCE — The Providence County Grand Jury returned an indictment Monday, Aug. 29, against the suspects in the August 2014 murder of t city man Yusef A'Vant.
The Attorney General's office reported Thomas Mosley, 34, and Evan Watson, 27, both of Providence, were each indicted with one count of murder, one count of conspiracy, one count of possession of a firearm without a license, and one count of discharging a firearm while committing a crime of violence. The Grand Jury also indicted Mosley of three counts of obstruction of the judicial system.
It is alleged that on or about August 13, Mosely and Watson shot and killed Mr. A’vant at his place of business, a hair salon on Pawtucket Avenue just past the intersection of Warren Avenue. It is further alleged that on multiple occasions Mosley obstructed the judicial system in the investigation of A’Vant’s murder.
The East Providence and Providence Police Departments conducted the investigation. Mosley and Evans are scheduled to be arraigned in Providence County Superior Court before Justice Robert D. Krause on September 7.
Just over two years ago, Mr. Mosely is alleged to have entered Mr. A'vant's place of business on Pawtucket Avenue, “Krazy Kuts” barbershop and salon, and fired at least one gun shot at the victim, who was cutting a customer's hair. The patron of the business was uninjured.
According to eyewitnesses at the time of the shooting, the suspect fled the scene by car, believed to be driven by Evans, heading towards Interstate 195 just down the road. Mr. A'Vant, a 42-year-old father, died as a result of his wounds.
In the ensuing days, police released a sketch artist's rendering of the suspect, presumed now to be Mosely. East Providence Police worked in concert with their counterparts from Providence and the State Police deliberately investigated the case for nearly a year before Mosely's arrest was announced on July 8, 2015.
