Mrs. Gloria Marie (Graves) Varola, 86, of Bristol, died Tuesday, Jan. 17, 2017 at Silver Creek Manor, Bristol. She was the wife of the late Peter Varola.
Born and raised in Riverside, she was a daughter of the late Joseph S. and Martha L. (Hazelton) Graves. Gloria was a special education teacher’s aide for the Bristol public schools for 20 years, retiring in 1991. She previously worked for the McClellan, McCrory and Green stores. She was a communicant of Our Lady of Mount Carmel Church and a member of its Rosary and Altar Society and Nocturnal Adoration Society.
A past president and treasurer for the Bristol Senior Citizens Council, a member of the Bristol Senior Center, the Benjamin Church Manor Tenants Association, a member and former trustee of the former Hope Circle # 70, Daughters of Isabella, Bristol, the Columban Fathers Outing and Bazaar Committee, the Sunshine Club, Parents for Alternative Living (PAL), Bristol County RIARC (RI Association for retarded Citizens), the Newport RIARC, Special Olympics Volunteer, the Kaiser Retirees Association and a volunteer for many years for the Matadors, Picadors and Generations Drum and Bugle Corps. Gloria was an avid knitter.
She is survived by four children, Linda Marie Varola of Newport, Paula Jean Ferreira (Clifford), Peter J. Varola (Andrea) of Simpsonville, SC, and James A. Varola (Paula) of West Warwick; four grandchildren, Clifford Ferreira, Jr., Christina Guimar, Christopher Amaral and Kimberly Roy; five great grandchildren, Mikayla Patton, Richard Guimar III, Cassidy, Joshua and Chloe Roy; and a great great grandson, Colten Roy. In addition to her husband and parents, she was preceded in death by a daughter, Nancy Ann Amaral (Frank), and two sisters, Maureen Aguiar and Martha Silva.
Funeral services from the Sansone Funeral Home, 192 Wood St., Bristol, Monday, Jan. 23, 2017 at 9 a.m., with a Mass of Christian Burial at 10 a.m. in Our Lady of Mount Carmel Church, 141 State St., Bristol. Burial will follow in St. Mary’s Cemetery, Chestnut Street, Bristol. Visiting hours Sunday, Jan. 22, 2017, 2-6 p.m.
