Girls Basketball: Pesky Tigers best Mt. Hope

Tiverton wins its third league game in a row

BRISTOL — The Tiverton High School girls’ basketball team is in the midst of a three-game Division III winning streak.
After starting the season off 1-3, the Tigers have since found their stride, improving their record to 4-3 after a 57-35 victory over Mt. Hope Thursday night, Jan. 12.

Lauren Gamache paced Tiverton with 15 points. Katie Phillips was next for the Tigers with 13. Jenna Cimbron led all scorers with 17 for the Huskies.

“I think they are doing a really good job and their defense is what is winning them games,” head coach Janette Lopes said. “Their shooting is really good and if we can work the in and out game, they can improve from here on out.”
Offensively, Tiverton has been led by junior Katie Phillips who standouts on and off the court.
“She has had an excellent season and she would be a kid I nominate for student of the week because her academics and athletics is what makes her such a strong student,” Coach Lopes said. “She is in the gym shooting when no one else is.”
Phillips isn’t acting alone as senior Lauren Gamache has improved dramatically since last season.
“Lauren has really stepped it up from last year and she has turned into a wonderful there point shooter,” Coach Lopes said. “She is really taking it seriously.”
The Tigers have experienced a lot of close games so far with three out of their seven games being decided by five point or less. “Team work has really helped us in those games,” Coach Lopes said. “We don’t have one go-to person even if it looks that way in the stats, but at any given time we can rely on anyone.”
Moving forward, Coach Lopes wants to see players who have been struggling, improve.
“I would like to see some of the kids who have been struggling shooting, work on their shots which would only make us better.”

Mt. Hope notes

The Mt Hope High School girls’ basketball team is off to a bit of a surprisingly good start to their Division III league season, doing so with a very young roster.

The Huskies do not have a single senior on their roster leaving them with one of the youngest teams in the league, but that hasn’t stopped them from going 4-2 in league play so far, including a loss to Tiverton on January 12.

“I am really impressed with my team,” head coach Victor Kashouh said. “They come to play every game and they focus on the defensive end which is what we have been  teaching on a lot. They are really playing well and they have passed my incoming expectations.”

One of the things that has stood out to Coach Kashouh is the fight this team has which showed in a recent lopsided loss.

“They don’t ever quit and I love that because it is a testament to how hard they work,” he said. “They fight to the end and I love my girls for that.”

Leading the Huskies is junior, guard Jenna Cimbron who is leading the state in one impressive category.

“She is our everything and we go as she goes,” Coach Kashouh said. “She leads the state in free throws made right now and she works really hard. She really gets her teammates going.”

Mt. Hope is also led by two sophomores with Thea Brum at the point and Sara Godfrey inside.

“Sara is really playing outstanding,” Coach Kashouh said. “She has had a 20 rebounding game and a few double, doubles which has exceeded my expectations by a mile. She is all over the floor and is only a sophomore.”

While the Huskies are focused on this year, this season is all part of a longer plan that Coach Kashouh wants to execute.

“Not a single senior on the roster so me and my assistant coach Henry (Cabral) have talked about a two-year plan,” he said. “This year we are going to try and do our best and next year we will bring everyone back and hopefully be better.”
